Bjorn Sandstede is the Alumni-Alumnae University Professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. His research focuses on applied dynamical systems, data science, and computational and mathematical biology. Before moving to Brown, he held faculty positions at The Ohio State University and the University of Surrey. Sandstede received an Alfred P Sloan Research Fellowship, the SIAM JD Crawford Prize, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, the Elsevier Jack Hale Award, and teaching and mentoring awards from Brown University. He was selected as a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. At Brown, Sandstede served as Department Chair and as Director of Brown's Data Science Initiative.

Sandstede received his undergraduate degree from the University of Heidelberg and his PhD from the University in Stuttgart. Before coming to Brown in 2008, he worked at The Ohio State University and the University of Surrey in England. Sandstede received an Alfred P Sloan Research Fellowship, the SIAM JD Crawford Prize, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and the Elsevier Jack Hale Award, and he was selected as a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Sandstede is also the recipient of Brown's Philip Bray Award for Teaching Excellence, the Graduate School Faculty Award for Advising and Mentoring, and a Royce Family Professorship of Teaching Excellence.

At Brown, Sandstede served as department chair, as director of Brown's Data Science Initiative, as vice chair of the Research Advisory Board, and as member of the Advisory Board of the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, the College Curriculum Council, the Data Governance Committee, and the Tenure, Promotions, and Appointments Committee. He is one of the founding principal investigators of the NSF grant that established Brown's Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM).
